The objective of this research was to conduct a bench scale study of fixed activated sludge treating domestic sewage. Two different units employing diffused aeration with plastic and aluminum media were studied in four separate phases. Data indicated that the system could produce a high quality effluent without any requirements for sludge recycling through the system. Suspended solids concentrations of 3-6 mg/1, BOD5 concentrations of 4-12 mg/1 and COD concentrations of 35-45 mg/1 were found in the effluent with wastewater retentions ranging from 3-15 hours, whereas an indication of nitrification was observed in higher detention periods. As far as the type of media was concerned, the plastic and aluminum media did not differ significantly once the microbes had grown on the media.

One hundred and twenty two blood samples from patients with AMI and ACI were analyzed for glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride by colorimetric method, and for lipoprotein by Millipore agaro-slide electrophoretic technique. The results presented in this communication indicated that patients with AMI and ACD had higher abnormal GTT than that of the controls. The cholesterol and triglyceride levels were high in the blood of patients as well. It was also found that 70.3% of the patients had normal lipoprotein pattern, but 9.5% had type II, 8.1% type III, and 12.1% type IV. The results have further shown that type IV lipoprotein was the most common one in the patients studied.

Bilateral finger and palm prints of 500 males and 500 females of the Caucasian origin in South Iran have been collected and analyzed for both qualitative and quantitative dermatoglyhic features. Results show that most of the qualitative features on bilateral and bisexual differences are not significant. However, quantitative features frequently showed significant differences both bilaterally and bisexually. These results, when, compared with some Indian groups revealed insignificant differences in qualitative dermatoglyphics, while, the quantitative features frequently showed significant differences. The importance of quantitative dermatoglyphic features in population studies has been discussed.

A pancreatopeptidase (Elastase) digest index was devised for a rapid and accurate estimation of protein quality. This index was calculated on the basis of all the amino acids released by an in-vitro Elastase digestion, acid hydrolyses of same sample and the residue of enzyme hydrolyzed. The amino acids were determined by Thin-Layer Chromatography. Samples used were cooked white kidneybeans, cooked and over-heated soybean powder, and skimmed milk powder. Good correlation was observed between elastase index value and their biological values reported in the literature from feeding trials. The pattern of aminoacids released by acid and by enzyme hydrolysis was about the same.
